2014 Isla Vista killings
By Caitlin Dewey By Caitlin Dewey May 27, Follow caitlindewey Police were examining this video posted on YouTube in which a man who identifies himself as Elliot Rodger says he is planning an attack in Isla Vista because he had been snubbed by women. This video contains language that some may find disturbing. Rodger has personally been linked to an account on the pick-up site PUAhate.
In his last YouTube video, in which he chillingly announces the start of his killing spree, Rodger even cops some classic pick-up lingo: The true alpha male.
What a beautiful view:
Elliot Oliver Robertson Rodger July 24, — May 23, was confirmed by police to be the sole perpetrator of the killings. His mother is Li Chin Rodger, a Malaysian research assistant for a film company, and his father is British filmmaker Peter Rodger , whose credits include working as a second unit assistant director for The Hunger Games.
After his father remarried, he and his second wife Soumaya Akaaboune, a Moroccan actress, had a son together. In his manifesto, he said that he dropped out of all his classes in February He wrote that he had been prescribed risperidone but refused to take it, stating, “After researching this medication, I found that it was the absolute wrong thing for me to take. He said that he was unable to make friends although acquaintances said that he rebuffed their attempts to be friendly.
He said in an interview, “I first met [Rodger] when he was aged eight or nine and I could see then that there was something wrong with him.
But other versions of such violence are all around us, most notably in the pandemic of hate toward and violence against women. As media critic Jennifer Pozner put it in about another massacre by a woman-hating man, I am sick to death that I have to keep writing some version of this same article or blog post on loop. But I have to, because in all of these cases, gender-based violence lies at the heart of these crimes—and leaving this motivating factor uninvestigated not only deprives the public of the full, accurate picture of the events at hand, but leaves us without the analysis and context needed to understand the violence, recognize warning signs, and take steps to prevent similar massacres in the future.
The Isla Vista murderer took out men as well as women, but blowing away members of a sorority seems to have been the goal of his rampage. He evidently interpreted his lack of sexual access to women as offensive behavior by women who, he imagined in a sad mix of entitlement and self-pity, owed him fulfillment. YesAllWomen Richard Martinez, the father of one of the young victims, spoke powerfully on national TV about gun control and the spinelessness of the politicians who have caved to the gun lobby, as well as about the broader causes of such devastation.
We are going to be very judicious about the use of that video, mindful that its continued use turns it into wallpaper.
Many commentators have pointed to the inherent misogyny and entitlement within Elliot Rodger’s manifesto. Michael Kimmel and Cliff Leek discuss the importance of race in their analysis of the shooting , and Jeff Yang discusses the important intersections of class and race in Rodger’s life. I agree with both articles’ points regarding the importance of race and class in Rodger’s feelings of entitlement. However, I would like to argue that Rodger’s rampage might also be a statement about the way in which our society often effeminizes Asian men.
Within American society, Asian women are considered the most desirable women in online dating forums, while Asian men are less popular in online dating markets than black or Latino men. Asian men’s low ratings on dating websites points to how influential ideas of the effeminate Asian are. As one researcher on dating preferences points out, “Asian men are often depicted as geeky nerds with high intelligence but low charisma. Instead, Asian men are typecast as nerds, villains, or martial arts heroes, rarely ever as a romantic lead.
In popular culture, Asian men are considered “skinny,” “petite,” and “hairless” — all things pointing to a lack of masculinity within our culture. The most effeminizing popular assumption made about Asian men is concerning their penis size. Since Asian men are considered petite, the same word is used to describe their “manhood. While Asian men’s sexuality is invisibilized in our society, African-American sexuality is portrayed as dangerously attractive.
Women can be and do get rejected and friendzoned by men, too! As a single woman in my 20s, I, and many other women I know, have been rejected many, many times. Sure, I made friends with guys, and I cherish my strong platonic friendships with them. But in the romantic playing field? They fell into one of these three categories:

View Caption of Garden City, N. After stabbing his three roommates, the year-old loaded his guns and drove toward University of California, Santa Barbara, intent on killing women. He fatally shot two, plus one man, and injured 13 other people before turning the gun on himself. Such massacres are disturbing not only in themselves, but for what they reveal about the depth of misogyny in our culture, and about the soul-destroying social expectations that boys and young men experience around their masculinity.
If we are serious as a culture about preventing future atrocities, we need to change the way we socialize boys and men. And we will need to dismantle a culture that routinely treats women and girls as sexual objects and targets of real and virtual violence.

Flowers have been placed outside the apartment where Elliot Rodger lived and allegedly stabbed three victims to death in Isla Vista. He said it time and again: The world was a magical, beautiful place, but only in stark contrast to his small, pitiful life. Advertisement But according to interviews with Rodger’s acquaintances, law enforcement officials and mental health professionals, all that was known about the year-old college student was that he was terribly sad.
And being sad is not a crime, nor the sort of mental state that would, alone, cross a legal threshold requiring official response. The mental health system is imperfect, by design — a teeter-totter that weighs patients’ civil liberties against public safety. Rodger existed in the middle, on the fulcrum, simmering and disturbed, just beyond arm’s reach.
In that quiet space he planned his attack — lonely, but highly functioning; worrisome, but never explicitly threatening himself or anyone else; bumping into police, but never landing in jail; resistant to medication, but never outright rejecting care; able to articulate his misery, but conniving enough that authorities did not see a need for involuntary hospitalization. The writing may have been on the wall, but no one — despite the apparently diligent efforts of his family, therapists and doctors, and law enforcement — knew what it said until it was too late.
He had traveled extensively, to Morocco, Singapore and England. All along, he harbored a crushing darkness. His family suspected he was somewhere on the autism spectrum, and he had been in therapy since childhood. He was prescribed psychotropic drugs but declined to take them, he wrote.

At all times, Break the Cycle encourages readers to take whatever precautions necessary to protect themselves emotionally and psychologically. Elliot Rodger, a year-old man, went on a killing spree, taking the lives of six people before committing suicide.
In the weeks leading up to the shooting, Rodger posted angry, vitriolic YouTube videos of himself declaring his hatred of women along with a page manifesto detailing his childhood and adolescence, which he describes as filled with isolation, loneliness and rejection by his peers. Yet he had specific concerns that may resonate with many young adults: The shooter was an extreme case, and his views are in no way to be shared, honored, glorified or put on a pedestal.
However, a lot of teens and young people may face similar feelings of isolation, rejection and pressure every day. We as a society often encourage and expect certain things out of gender roles. Or young women may feel they have to offer or accept sexual advances depending on the circumstances. We need to talk about how these expectations are harming young people and leading to violence. And when anyone — you, us, your child, your friend — expresses in anyway that they do feel entitled, we all need to take that as a warning sign and re-examine our attitudes and behaviors.
Tragedies like what happened at Isla Vista are preventable. And so are the other acts of injustice expressed online through the YesAllWomen hashtag.
