On days with a north west winds we are able to pull on the Atlantic side flats in just a foot of water. That is the preferred depth to find bonefish in schools either tailing or moving along the bottom. Also for the more advanced angler throwing a crab fly with an eighth weight fly rod is also a lot of fun. In the deeper water the permit can be seen tailing and swimming along in the current. Tossing a live blue crab will get you hooked up with a fish of a lifetime.

Redfish, black drum, snook, trout, and Sheepshead are all targeted species. We like to toss a jig head tipped with shrimp in the channels with moving current slowly bouncing the bait along the bottom.

Each year, thousands of commercial, recreational and pleasure boaters visit the Florida Keys to fish, dive, snorkel and enjoy a wealth of activities on the water, including kayaking and paddle board sports. FKNMS has spectacular and unique resources such as coral reefs, shipwrecks, seagrass beds and fisheries that are the source of commercial and recreational activities like diving, fishing and boating. Just by way of letting you know that I am not of only recent acquaintance with the Florida Keys, let me go back in time for about fifty years. Sarasota, on the Florida west coast, was home. However, mention the name Marathon among members of the commercial fishing fleet and you would be on familiar ground. These fishermen came by the hundreds.

The name Marathon was synonymous with kingfish. My very first look at the area was during the summer of It was vacation time from the University of Florida. Vacation time meant a couple of weeks of sailing time with school buddy, Clinton Johnson. We had sailed our 21 foot open boat from Sarasota out to the Marquesas, into Key West and were sort of coasting back towards home. We put into this place called Marathon to take on a few staples and find a couple of jugs of water.

We docked at a rough and tumble facility at just about where the Marathon Yacht Club is now located and made our way the long block up to the commercial center of the village of Marathon.

Wednesday, August 22, A Key West Weekend Maybe it’s the three hour drive that sloughs away petty worries and aggravations, as south Miami suburbia gives way to Homestead farms and nurseries, which in turn give way to islands and open water. Maybe it’s the people, the motley historical confluence of traders, fishermen, treasure seekers, drug dealers, Cubans, Bahamians, gays, hippies, writers, musicians and miscreants of all sorts that make it feel so different.

Maybe it’s just that feeling of being completely enveloped by ocean, the Atlantic on one side and the Gulf of Mexico only fifteen blocks away on the other. Even for a native Miamian like myself, Key West really feels like something of an escape.

These operations are owned and run by one person, but have multiple guides with less experience.

Key West is the Southernmost city in the United States, just a 4-hour drive from Miami on the scenic coastal Overseas Highway with plenty of interesting and kitschy things to do during the mile trip, including crossing 42 different bridges. No visit to South Florida is complete without road tripping down to the Conch Republic for a few days. Especially if you like pirates, key lime pie, water-sports, and live music!

These were our favorite things to do on a road trip from Miami to Key West. They make it easy by delivering it to the airport or your hotel in Miami. Once you have it, just drop the top, remove some clothing, turn up the volume, and enjoy the drive! We made our way down to Marathon Key under the warm sun stopping for photos and quirky souvenirs, like a stuffed shark who would become our mascot for the rest of the trip.

Growing up to 8 feet long and weighing over pounds, Tarpon is huge game fish that live in the tropical waters off the Florida Keys. Fishermen from around the world travel here just for a chance to catch and release one of these monsters. Be careful, they have small teeth that will leave marks! I recommend driving down over the course of 2 days, spending a night in Marathon before continuing on to Key West. Both serve up all kinds of tasty fresh fish caught locally.

While compared to many other areas of North America that may be true, but not so much as you might think. Water temps in the Key West area stay pretty steady near the deep waters of the Gulf Stream. Inland however that can be a different story. I have seen certain flats throughout the year range in temps from 62 – 89 degrees. Thats a pretty broad range. With the constantly sweeping tides here in Key West that bring water back and forth from the Atlantic Ocean to the Gulf of Mexico along with atmospheric condition changes creates our seasonal differences.

There really is no “line in the sand” effect to our seasons in Key West fishing. Just a guideline of usuals and seasonal changes that will affect what we know of the fishing.
